Foods That Make You Poop, and Roughly How Long They Take

Prunes, kiwifruit, pears, beans and oats are the reliable ones, and none works as fast as people expect. Median whole-gut transit in 863 healthy adults was 28.7 hours. The urge you feel after breakfast is your colon responding to the act of eating, roughly a day before that breakfast arrives.
There is a piece of folk arithmetic underneath almost every search on this topic, and it is wrong in an interesting way. We assume that what goes in this morning comes out this morning, because that is what the timing feels like from the inside.
It does not. The measured average is closer to a day and a bit, which changes what a food is even for. This page belongs to our guide to everyday digestion.
What foods make you poop?
Prunes, kiwifruit, pears, apples with the skin on, beans, oats and ground flax are the dependable ones. Each combines fiber with something else that helps: sorbitol in prunes, an enzyme in kiwifruit, gel in oats. A 79-person trial put kiwifruit and prunes on level terms with a 12-gram psyllium dose.
What the dependable foods have in common is that none of them relies on fiber alone.
Prunes carry roughly 7 grams of fiber per 100 grams and a substantial dose of sorbitol, a sugar alcohol the small intestine absorbs poorly, which draws water into the bowel behind it. Kiwifruit carries soft fiber plus actinidin, a protein-digesting enzyme unusual in fruit. Oats carry beta-glucan, which forms a gel. Beans carry both bulk and a large helping of fermentable material for the bacteria.
The trial worth knowing gave 79 adults with chronic constipation either two kiwifruit a day, 100 grams of prunes a day, or 12 grams of psyllium a day, for four weeks.1 All three improved complete bowel movements and straining. Two pieces of fruit and a handful of prunes held their own against the reference fiber supplement.

Median whole-gut transit was 28.7 hours in 863 healthy adults, with a normal range of roughly 24 to 48. Under 12 hours suggests something is pulling water into the bowel; over 72 is slow transit. A food eaten tonight is most likely to show up the day after tomorrow.
This is the number that reframes the whole question.
In the PREDICT cohort, 863 healthy adults swallowed a blue-dye marker and recorded when it appeared.2 The median was 28.7 hours. Not two hours, not six: a day and four hours, with wide variation between individuals and a normal window running from about 24 to 48 hours.3
So why does breakfast so often produce an urge within twenty minutes? Because that urge is not the breakfast. Eating triggers the gastrocolic reflex, in which the arrival of food in the stomach signals the colon to contract, via gastrin, cholecystokinin and the vagus nerve.4 The colon also runs a few high-amplitude sweeping contractions a day, weighted toward morning. What you pass after breakfast is yesterday's dinner, moved along by today's.
Which means a food's job is not to trigger anything today. Its job is to change what arrives at your colon tomorrow, and the day after, and the week after that.

Does pineapple make you poop?
Probably not much, and no trial has tested it. A cup of pineapple carries about 2.3 grams of fiber and a great deal of water, which is helpful but unremarkable. Bromelain, the enzyme it is famous for, digests protein in the stomach and has no established effect on the colon.
Pineapple has an outsized reputation and a fairly ordinary nutritional profile.
The enzyme story is where the reputation comes from. Bromelain is real, it is genuinely unusual, and it breaks down protein. Protein digestion happens in the stomach and small intestine, which is several rooms away from where stool is formed. Nobody has run a trial of pineapple on bowel frequency, so the honest answer is that a cup of pineapple is a cup of water with about two and a half grams of fiber in it, and it will behave accordingly.
That is not a knock on pineapple. It is a knock on the way single foods get sold as levers.
Does ginger make you poop?
Ginger adds essentially no fiber and no bulk: a whole tablespoon of fresh grated ginger carries under 0.2 grams. Its reputation comes from what it does higher up, in the stomach, where it settles nausea and helps a heavy meal move on. If ginger reliably sends you to the bathroom, look at what you drank it in.
Ginger is a stomach herb that got promoted.
Its well-attested effects are upper-gastrointestinal: nausea, fullness, the sensation of a meal sitting. Those are worth having. They are not the same as the colonic work that produces a bowel movement, and a tablespoon of ginger contributes a rounding error of fiber.
The practical note is the last line of the block above. Ginger usually arrives dissolved in something: a large mug of hot water, a lemon drink, a juice with a good deal of fruit in it. The hot liquid on an empty stomach is doing more of the work than the root is.
Do spinach and blueberries make you poop?
Both help a little and neither is a lever. A cup of raw spinach carries about 0.7 grams of fiber, and a cup of blueberries about 3.6, so blueberries do more work than their reputation suggests and spinach does less. Cooked spinach concentrates: a cup holds around 4.3 grams.
Spinach is the clearest example of how misleading a raw serving can be.
A cup of raw spinach is mostly air. It wilts to about a tenth of its volume, which is why the cooked figure is six times the raw one for the same measuring cup. If you are counting on salad greens for fiber, you are eating a great deal of leaf for very little.
Blueberries are the opposite surprise. A cup carries around 3.6 grams, which is more than a cup of cooked carrots and about the same as a tablespoon of soaked chia, and nobody thinks of blueberries as a fiber food. Frozen are perfect, and cheaper.

Prunes, then beans, then pears and apples with their skins, then oats. That is the ranking, and the top of it has been the top of it for as long as anyone has kept records.
Worth saying plainly: past prunes, the next step up is not a food. Senna tea sits on the same shelf as herbal tea and behaves like a stimulant laxative, because it is one. Magnesium citrate is a medicine that works by osmosis. Both have their uses and neither is groceries. If that is where you are heading, what each type of laxative actually does is worth five minutes first, because the four categories are not interchangeable and one of them is habit-forming.

Its strongest contractions cluster in the morning and after meals, and the reflex that triggers them fires whether or not you are paying attention.4 Most of what people call becoming regular is simply arranging your morning so that the reflex has somewhere to go: eat something, sit down without a phone, allow ten minutes, walk afterwards.
The other half is material. A colon needs enough volume of the right consistency to trigger the stretch receptors that start a sweep, and the floor for women is 25 grams of fiber a day against a typical intake of about 15.5 Gel-forming fiber softens; coarse fiber bulks; most plates want a bit of each.6
One more thing, because it is the question underneath the question. Normal is a wide range, and daily is not the only correct answer. Population diaries put the ordinary span somewhere between three times a day and three times a week.7 If yours is comfortable, complete, and predictable to you, it is very likely fine, whatever the internet has been telling you about morning routines.
